Fred Thornton Award

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fuel For Success has joined forces with several police departments within many States. Even though there has been many different cities and faces one thing hasn't changed, the need. Shell Oil Corporation has been instrumental in allowing the network of police agencies to tap into their communities and have a positive effect in the very fabric of those families lives.

Sustainable positive change has been the norm since the inception of this program in 2008. We have helped thousands of boys and girls see there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and yes someone truly cares. The police badges and patches may have obvious differences in color, shape and design. One thing that has stayed the same no matter which police department we have worked with, and that is sacrifice.

These men and women are willing to sacrifice for the weak, sacrifice for the good, and sacrifice for the young. It is the hope of the thousands of law enforcement officers that make up the Fuel For Success team that you enjoy the site but remember that we do it with unwavering sacrifice. Fred Thornton was one of the first officers that we paid tribute to in our newly found program.

                                                                     Police Officer

                                                                    Fred Thornton

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, North Carolina
End of Watch: Friday, February 25, 2011

Fred according to his wonderful wife Linda- "If you asked him for a hand he was there to lend it. If you asked him for guidance he was there to show you. If you asked him for protection he was there to shield you."

Officer Fred Thornton began is career in 1982 with Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Officer Thornton joined the SWAT team in 1987. During his tenure he received the NC Governor’s Award for Bravery and Heroism, the Medal of Valor, and the Chief’s award for Community Service.  He was deployed with MED-1 Mobile Hospital for relief efforts during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Rita. These families received help and support they disparately needed and Officer Thornton did this with compassion and unselfishness.

It is an honor for Officer Thornton and his family to become part of Shell Success and to become part of an organization that gives back, just as Officer Thornton did. As Dr. Nido Qubein, President of High Point University once stated…”Your present circumstances don’t determine where you go; they merely determine where you start.”

It is with sincere respect that we initiate this year in March, the Fred Thornton Memorial Award. We will select one outstanding officer from within the many law enforcement agencies that we partner with to represent the program in this very special way. This officer will represent excellence in community service and family as did Fred Thornton.
